Ingredients

  • 1 lb Ribeye steak

  • ½ lb Large shrimp (peeled & deveined)

  • 8 Corn or flour tortillas

  • 2 tbsp Olive oil

  • 2 cloves Garlic (minced)

  • 2 tbsp Lime juice

  • 1 tsp Cumin

  • 1 tsp Paprika

  • ½ tsp Chili powder

  • Salt and black pepper to taste

  • 1 Avocado (sliced)

  • ½ cup Red onion (thinly sliced)

  • ¼ cup Fresh cilantro

  • ¼ cup Cotija cheese

  • 2 tbsp Sour cream

  • Salsa for serving

Step by Step Instructions

  • Marinate the Steak: Take a bowl and combine black pepper, salt, chilli powder, paprika, cumin, lime juice, minced garlic and olive oil in it. Coat the steak entirely with the mixture and leave it for 15-30 minutes so it can absorb all the flavors.
  • Cook the Steak: Preheat your pan over medium high heat. Cook each side of the steak for 3 to 4 minutes. Once it is ready, keep it aside from heat and let it sit for 5 minutes before slicing it into thin strips. This will redistribute the juices into the steak and make it moist.
  • Sear the Shrimp: Put olive oil in the same pan and cook each side of shrimp for 1 to 2 minutes until the shrimp becomes pink and opaque. Shrimp can become rubbery if you overcook it. So avoid overcooking it. You can also season it lightly with salt and pepper to enhance its natural flavor.
  • Warm the Tortillas: Heat tortillas for 30 seconds per side in a pan or over an open flame until they are slightly charred and warm. Warming the tortillas enhances their texture and makes them more flexible.
  • Assemble the Tacos: Slice the steak and shrimp and place them on warm tortillas. Put avocado, cilantro, Cotija cheese, red onion, and a drizzle of sour cream on top of it.
  • Serve: Your flavorful shrimp steak tacos are ready. Serve them with salsa or lime wedges to enhance their flavor. You can also sprinkle some red pepper flakes on your tacos to make them spicier.

Chef Recommendations

  • Use fresh ingredients: Always use fresh herbs, garlic and lime juice for surf and turf tacos recipe. This creates a significant difference in the taste.
  • Let the steak rest: After cooking the steak, letting it rest for at least 5 minutes before slicing helps you keep it juicy.
  • Avoid overcooking shrimp: Stop cooking shrimp once it turns pink. Overcooking can make it chewy and dry.
  • Add a smoky flavor: To get a rich smoky taste, cook the steak and shrimp over the open flame.
  • Try different toppings: Topping the tacos dish with mango salsa, spicy chipotle sauce or pickled onion can increase the flavours.
  • Use high-quality tortillas: I personally recommend using high quality tortillas such as fresh tortillas or the handmade ones that can enhance the overall taco experience.

What to Serve with Steak and Shrimp Tacos

Steak and shrimp tacos can be paired with different side dishes. You can serve them with Mexican Rice with tomatoes and spices. Refried Beans is another delicious side dish to add an excellent rich creamy texture to the steak and shrimp tacos.

To produce a smoky and sweet flavor with a delightful crunch, Grilled Corns with these tacos work really well. Guacamole and Chips also go well with these tacos to have a light and refreshing contrast. Fresh salads of lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers are also great side dishes that level the richness of the tacos and make them crispy.

How to Store and Reheat Leftovers

You can refrigerate the tacos for up to 3 days in airtight containers. Use a pan over medium heat to reheat the tacos for about 2-3 minutes. Avoid using the microwave for reheating shrimp because it can make them rubbery. Use a dry pan or microwave oven to reheat tortillas for 10 to 15 seconds.

FAQs

How can I make the shrimp and steak tacos crisper?

Use a cast iron pan or skillet to cook shrimp and steak tacos. It retains heat nicely, letting the steak and shrimp have a rich and seared crust. Dry the shrimp with a paper towel before cooking. Drying it removes excess water and prevents shrimp from steaming. This process makes them extra crispy.  Also toast the tortillas on an open flame to get a crispier texture.
