Ingredients

  • 100g sushi-grade salmon, sliced into strips

  • ½ ripe avocado, sliced into thin strips

  • 1½ sheets of nori (seaweed)

  • 300g cooked sushi rice, seasoned with rice vinegar, sugar, and salt

  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar (for seasoning the rice)

  • ½ teaspoon sugar (for seasoning the rice)

  • A pinch of salt (for seasoning the rice)

  • Soy sauce, for dipping

  • Wasabi and pickled ginger, for serving

  • Bamboo sushi mat, for rolling

  • A bowl of water, to wet hands and prevent rice from sticking

Step by Step Instructions

  • Make Sushi Rice: Clean the sushi rice with cold water and cook the sushi rice in water. Once the water starts boiling, reduce the heat and cover the pot. Simmer it for 15 minutes and then remove it from heat and keep the pot covered for 10 minutes. In the meantime, take a small bowl and mix the sugar, vinegar, and salt until it is completely dissolved. Pour this mixture onto the rice and fold it gently with a spoon.
  • Prepare Fillings: Now, slice the sushi grade or smoked salmon into thin stripes. Slice avocado lengthwise into thin pieces. Finally slice the cucumber.
  • Assemble Sushi Rolls: Place a sheet of nori shiny side down on a bamboo sushi mat. Put the sushi rice evenly on the nori. Leave 1 inch border at the top. Finally, put two pieces of salmon, cucumber, and avocado slices on rice.
  • Roll It Up: Hold the fillings with your fingers and lift the edge of your bamboo mat. Start rolling it away from you and apply gentle pressure during rolling.  Continue rolling until nori is sealed. You can also use a bit of water to seal the edges of the nori.
  • Slice the Roll: Slice the roll with a sharp knife into multiple pieces.
  • Serve: Put the sushi roll pieces on a plate and serve with soy sauce or any of your favorite sauce and enjoy the meal.
